Southern California Gas has announced that it will be converting 200 of its new Ford F-250 service pickup trucks to renewable natural gas (RNG) fuel systems. The trucks will be equipped with a Landi Renzo Eco Ready ultra-low emissions system which is expected to reduce 2,000 metric tonnes of CO2 per year. The new changes to the company’s fleet mean that nearly 40% of SoCalGas’s service vehicles will now run on clean fuels.
The company has goals of achieving net zero GHG emissions in operations and delivery of energy by 2045, including scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions which also target those generated by SoCalGas’ energy infrastructure. RNG is produced from the waste of dairy farms, wastewater treatment plants, landfills, and other sources, capturing the methane from the waste to be used for energy while preventing emissions with high global warming potential from entering the atmosphere.
SoCalGas and South Coase AQMD have invested $600,000 towards Landi Renzo’s natural gas engine development initiatives for commercial vehicle applications. They will partner with Phenix Truck Body and CTED Truck Body to deliver a line of Ford 6.2L engines that are expected to be operational by the end of the year.
