Hyattsville, Maryland is, as of October 2021, the site of the first U.S. commercial deployment of a Class-6 zero emission refuse collection truck.
Developed by BYD Motors Inc. (aka Build Your Dreams)—a Lancaster, California-headquartered battery technology pioneer—the 6R is a battery-electric vehicle that can perform entire shift without recharging with more than 200 KWh of battery capacity capable of 120kW DC CCS1 charging.
Featuring a short wheelbase, the compact 6R has enhanced maneuverability capabilities for cramped urban areas.
Tracey Douglas, Hyattsville City Administrator said: “This addition to our growing electric vehicle fleet is one of the tools Hyattsville is using to move towards a clean energy future. We are proud to lead by example and demonstrate our care and concern for both the environment and the health of our employees."
Added Patrick Duan, BYD Senior Vice President said his company was proud of the deployment with Hyattsville, "Our innovative battery electric truck will allow for a smooth, quiet, and reliable solution to help the city reduce emissions and operating costs."
Environmental and employee health benefits will be achieved by the zero-emission vehicle, but the city said it would also see significant savings in fuel purchases and vehicle maintenance.
The 6R refuse collection truck utilizes an eight-yard rear loader lightweight Quantum body built by Curbtender, Inc. a family-owned manufacturer of refuse collection vehicles located in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
