Wouldn’t it be nice if you knew what lies beneath before you started digging?
That’s what the new Live Dig Radar (LDR) Excavate technology from RodRadar promises operators—a reduction in underground utility strikes.
Damage to underground utility infrastructure during excavation is a pressing global challenge that, despite significant attempts to resolve it, still costs the construction industry billions of dollars annually.
A bucket with integrated LDR technology (see images above) can be easily installed on any excavator, current or new, using industry-standard interfaces and attachment systems.
Inside the cab, the operator uses the LDR Visualize display unit. Using advanced algorithms to classify radar echoes, it provides the operator with automated, real-time alerts without the need for offsite expert analysis. Any novice operator with limited or no training can understand the information provided by LDR Excavate and independently avoid damaging underground utilities.

RodRadar LDR Visualize is in the cab providing operators an easy-to-use safety solution.
At The Utility Expo on September 26–28, 2023, in Louisville, Kentucky, RodRadar and AMI Attachments will be showcasing a live demonstration of the LDR technology at the AMI Attachments booth K107, Lot K.
RodRadar’s LDR Excavate provides operators with real-time, on-site detection and alerts of underground infrastructure during excavation. It increases safety, prevents costly damage, improves productivity and efficiency, and reduces environmental impact.
LDR Excavate can detect all types of pipes and utilities—gas, power, communications, fiber optics, water, sewage, oil, and chemicals—in different soils and types of substrates.
There are three bucket sizes available with a width of 18 or 24 inches (45 or 61 centimeters):
- Bucket Type I: 1 to 3.5 tons;
- Bucket Type II: 3.5 to 8.5 tons;
- Bucket Type III: 8.5 to 16 tons.
The Utility Expo is an exceptional opportunity to explore the latest advancements in utility technology, and the LDR is undoubtedly one of the most exciting innovations in the industry.
RodRadar’s and AMI’s experts will be available at the booth for one-on-one meetings, where they will provide detailed insights on how your next construction project can be safer and more efficient with LDR Excavate.
Founded in 2013, RodRadar said that its proprietary and patented ground-penetrating LDR technology and its line of products facilitate a new ecosystem of synergetic services and solutions that are set to modernize excavation, increase operator safety, improve productivity, and introduce project efficiencies.
