A free guide to navigating the Environmental Protection Agency’s tier 4 emissions mandates for construction equipment is now available from the Independent Equipment Dealers Association.
The white paper, titled Advice from the Experts: Getting the Best Pricing on Used Equipment in the Era of Tier 4, can be downloaded from the IEDA website.
The mandates are driving up demand for non-tier 4 equipment, “a trend IEDA members predict will continue for the next several years,” said a news release announcing the new guide.
Tier 4 is latest in a series of emissions standards for non-road diesel engines that EPA adopted in 1994 and began enacting in 1992. Tier 4 final, which went into effect in 2015, reduced the levels of oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter by 90 percent over the tier 3 levels.
According to the IEDA, increased demand for pre-tier 4 equipment has increased prices of those machines by up to 20 percent.
“Tier 3 and earlier units are also getting harder to find in some equipment categories, such as excavators, backhoe loaders, wheel loaders, dump trucks dozers and compact equipment,” the news release said.
The 13-page IEDA white paper gives an overview of the factors driving prices during the tier 4 era.
The paper also outlines strategies and tips in such areas as the following:
• asking key questions before buying;
• determining where to buy;
• evaluating online listings for used equipment;
• inspecting the equipment — and the seller; and
• using a basic checklist for evaluating a potential purchase.
IEDA members are equipment dealers from around the world specializing in used construction and mining equipment sales. Since the EPA implemented its new standards more than two decades ago, IEDA staff and members have watched closely how each new standard, like tier 4, has affected equipment availability and pricing.
“IEDA members are among the most active organizations buying and selling used equipment,” IEDA executive director Kristen Williams said in the news release. “The information provided within this white paper comes directly from those dealers and will help contractors ensure they get the best value for their used equipment dollars.”
