Volvo Trucks is increasing its use of recycled and renewable materials in its latest generation of heavy-duty trucks, signaling a broader push to reduce the environmental impact of vehicle manufacturing.
The initiative is reflected across the all-new Volvo VNL and VNR models, where sustainable material choices are being integrated into both structural and interior components.
“Our vision for the future of transportation extends beyond reducing tailpipe emissions,” explained Peter Voorhoeve, President, Volvo Trucks North America. “Every component of a truck presents an opportunity to reduce environmental impact. The all-new Volvo VNL and VNR demonstrate how sustainable material choices can be integrated into vehicle design while maintaining the premium quality, durability, and performance our customers expect from Volvo Trucks.”
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of recycled plastics into core vehicle components.
Beginning in May 2026, the splash shield inside the front wheel well is manufactured using 75 percent recycled plastic, a move expected to reduce carbon emissions associated with production.
Additional recycled content has been incorporated throughout the cab, including carpets made with up to 50 percent recycled materials and seatback components containing up to 75 percent recycled fibers.
Looking ahead, Volvo plans to further increase recycled content by introducing recycled plastic into 44 instrument panel components. These materials will be sourced and recycled in the United States, contributing to lower emissions and supporting domestic supply chains.
Beyond plastics, Volvo is also focusing on premium materials with a lower environmental footprint. The trucks feature genuine wood trim made from responsibly sourced Ayous wood, widely used in global manufacturing, offering an alternative to synthetic finishes commonly used across the industry.

“Sustainable design is most successful when customers never have to choose between environmental responsibility and product quality,” stated Brian Balicki, Head of Design, Volvo Trucks North America. “Our goal is to create products that look and feel premium while reducing environmental impact throughout the vehicle lifecycle.”
The company’s approach extends into ongoing research and development. Volvo teams are exploring a range of next-generation materials, including bio-based composites derived from agricultural byproducts, recycled consumer plastics, reclaimed ocean plastics, and improved design-for-disassembly processes that support a more circular lifecycle for truck components.
These developments represent part of a longer-term strategy aimed at increasing recyclability and reducing the overall environmental footprint of commercial transportation equipment. By embedding sustainability into both design and manufacturing, Volvo is positioning its latest truck models as a step toward a more circular future for the industry.
Volvo Trucks North America, headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina, is one of the leading heavy-duty truck manufacturers in North America, offering a full lineup of diesel, alternative-fuel, and all-electric vehicles and operates as part of the global Volvo Group.
