On May 23, 2025, it was announced that Nippon Steel of Japan was able to partner with US Steel for $14 billion.
The art of the deal, lauded and approved by US President Donald Trump is said to keep US Steel’s headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and bring that $14 billion in as an investment toward the US economy.
The key phrasing here is “partnership” as opposed to sold. It’s a $14 billion partnership.
Back in December of 2023, US Steel was in line to be sold to Nippon Steel for $14.3 billion. So even though there was $300 million lost on the sale, it appears as though US Steel continues to be a company where steel is made in America, by American steelworkers, but with Japanese partners helping to foot the bill for upkeep, production, and hopefully profits for all.
Announcing the news on TruthSocial, President Trump wrote: “This will be a planned partnership between United States Steel and Nippon Steel, which will create at least 70,000 jobs, and add $14 Billion Dollars to the U.S. Economy. The bulk of that Investment will occur in the next 14 months.”
