Thanks to Volta Power Systems, a new electric utility truck for the Holland Board of Public Works (HBPW) of Michigan is cleaner, quieter, and less expensive to maintain.
The vehicle uses an advanced lithium-ion auxiliary power system that allows workers to perform duties all day from the truck on a single charge—without having to idle the motor.
HBPW's investment in the clean technology truck—manufactured by Palfinger/ETI—is part of Holland’s Community Energy Plan to align its distribution operations.
"Holland is one of the first communities in the country using this type of advanced energy technology to help our community meet energy efficiency and anti-idling goals," stated Dave Koster, HBPW General Manager. "A good portion of the working hours of our bucket trucks are spent idling, so this technology will significantly reduce the overall emissions of the vehicle."
The 13.2 kWh system powers hydraulic equipment, power tools, and even exportable worksite power. It charges from the alternator as well at an overnight garage without specialized equipment.
For savings—HBPW estimates it will save up to $14,000 a year just in reduced fuel and maintenance costs, and will prevent ~42,000 lbs of CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions from being released into the air.
An added benefit is that its idle-free system provides quiet nighttime operation during any emergency repair work to avoid the noise pollution that could disrupt sleepy homes nearby.
Volta Power Systems was founded in 2014 by a team of investors and entrepreneurs with experience in the development of li-ion drive-train systems for hybrid cars and electric vehicles and has since expanded to include auxiliary power systems for RVs, boats, and work trucks.
"Over the past 15 years, Holland has seen the development of ground-breaking li-ion technology for EVs, and that same technology is at the heart of HBPW's newest anti-idle system," said Jack Johnson, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Volta Power Systems. "We're really grateful to see the benefits of our community's R&D investments come full-circle back to Holland through this local partnership."
