Aurora Innovation, Inc. has introduced its second-generation driverless Class 8 trucks, marking the latest step in the company's effort to expand autonomous freight operations across the United States.
The new trucks will be deployed throughout Aurora's commercial network, which currently includes 10 driverless routes across the US Sun Belt. The announcement comes as the company seeks to meet growing customer demand for autonomous freight transportation services.
According to Aurora, its self-driving system, known as the Aurora Driver, has completed nearly 440,000 driverless miles on public roads as of the end of June 2026. The company said recent route expansion has contributed to increased commercial interest, including a customer's plan to purchase 500 trucks equipped with the Aurora Driver.
“Last year’s driverless launch proved our technology could operate safely on public roads – our new platform now provides the foundation to deliver at scale,” explained Chris Urmson, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Aurora. “Deploying our second-generation truck allows us to put hundreds of autonomous trucks on the road and ultimately into the hands of more customers.”
The latest autonomous platform is built on the International LT Series and incorporates Aurora's next-generation hardware. The company said the upgraded hardware is designed to deliver greater computing power and a service life of up to one million miles, both of which are intended to support large-scale deployment.
Before launching the new trucks, Aurora said it completed its Safety Case process for the vehicle and hardware platform. The process is designed to evaluate whether the autonomous system is ready to operate on public roads without a driver behind the wheel.
To support manufacturing growth, Aurora is working with Roush, a product development supplier who are responsible for integrating Aurora's hardware and installing redundant vehicle systems at a dedicated production facility. The companies have also established a formal upfit process intended to streamline vehicle production, positioning Roush to reach an annual production run-rate of 1,000 Aurora trucks later this year.
“By working with a world-class manufacturing partner like Roush, we can meet our customer demand and continue to make the movement of goods safer and more efficient across the country,” added Urmson.
For fleets and service providers, the continued expansion of autonomous trucking technology could have long-term implications ranging from maintenance requirements and vehicle diagnostics to fleet management practices and equipment support.
While widespread deployment remains in its early stages, Aurora's latest announcement highlights the pace at which autonomous freight programs are moving from testing into commercial operations.
