Southco has expanded its R4 rotary latch line with a new heavy-duty model engineered to solve long-standing cab access issues in off-highway and agricultural equipment.
The R4‑50 Rotary Latch with Dual Triggers is built to withstand harsh vibration, prevent accidental door releases, and simplify entry and exit for operators working in demanding environments.
The company noted that operators often struggle with inconsistent or overly complex door mechanisms. As the release stated, “Rough environments cause vibration, accidental door releases risk safety, and complex access mechanisms can slow down work in the field.”
The R4‑50 introduces several upgrades aimed at improving reliability and usability. Independent interior and exterior actuation gives operators smoother, more intuitive control, while a preloaded interior hand lever reduces noise and vibration during operation. The latch also incorporates accidental actuation prevention to keep doors secure during machine movement.
To support a wide range of cab layouts, the R4‑50 offers multiple release options, including cable, rod, or direct push actuation. The latch meets FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) 206 impact requirements and EN (European Norm) 45545‑3 fire protection standards, making it suitable for both construction and agricultural applications.
Southco positions the R4‑50 as a drop-in upgrade for OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) already using the R4 platform.
The company said the new model combines operator safety, rugged durability, and simplified access in one cost-effective system. The latch is also compatible with Southco AC actuators, giving manufacturers a low‑investment path to modernizing existing cab entry systems.
Cynthia Bart, Southco Global Product Manager, said the R4‑50 is designed to streamline integration for equipment designers. “The latches are compatible with Southco AC Actuators, allowing designers to quickly and affordably upgrade their existing designs.”
